What the hell is it?
WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) is a wireless networking standard that tries to make connections between a router and wireless devices faster and easier. Not all but majority of old routers supports it. If your router have it enabled by default then you may be in trouble.
How does it work?
In a normal setup, you can’t connect to wireless device to a wireless network unless you know its name of Wi-Fi (SSID) and Password (WPA-PSK key), but there are several way to connect to wireless network using WPS :
How normal users use it-
- First Press the WPS button on router to turn on the discovery of new devices. Then go to your device like laptop or smartphone and select the network you want to connect to. Your device will automatically connected to wireless network without entering the network password.
- In printer or wireless range extenders they have their own WPS button.
- You can use 8 digits PIN. All router with WPS enabled have a PIN code. PIN code is generated automaticallly and a user cannot change it. New user can find that PIN in router manual configuration book.
- Last Method also involves using an eight digit PIN. Some routers do not have a WPS button but comes with WPS support will generate a client PIN. You can enter that PIN in wireless configuration panel and the router use that pin to add new user.
How hack nerds break WPS-
The Problem with Wi-fi Protected setup is the PIN is very Insecure because the WPS standard mandates the use of a PIN on your router. Even if you never use that PIN, the router will generate it. Generated PIN is stored by routers in two blocks of four digits each. The router checks PIN blocks separately in the form four digits.
Weakness of this pin is that the smart hacker with the right tools can brute-force the first block four digits then second block four digits.Once this PIN is brute forced, they can connect to your wireless network and gain complete access to your network.
Usage on Various OS-
There are many Operating system that provide native support for “Wifi Protected Setup” and uses it for wireless networking.
Windows supports WPS since 2007 when Windows Vista was launched. Since then all New Windows Upgrades support It.
Android start using it since they launched their android version 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
Blackberry has started to offer native support for WPS at the end of 2010, when they launched BlackBerry 6.
But there are still many Operating system Which doesn’t seems to support this like Apple’s OS X for PC and their mobile operating system iOS , Miscrsoft Window Phone and the some popular Linux distributions like Ubuntu.
As you see, Hackers can easily bypass WPS security. So, Log onto your Router webpage and disable WPS on Wireless security page.
